About Parc naturel régional Périgord-Limousin

Established in 1998, Parc naturel régional Périgord-Limousin covers over 180,000 hectares across the departments of Dordogne and Haute-Vienne in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The park features a gentle landscape of vast oak and chestnut forests, limestone plateaus, valleys, rivers, and traditional villages. It plays a crucial role in the conservation of regional flora and fauna, including several protected species like the European pond turtle and black stork. The park's forests provide habitat for wildlife such as roe deer, wild boar, and various birds of prey. Historically, the territory reflects a long human presence with medieval castles, Romanesque churches, and traditional Limousin architecture adding cultural interest. Visitors can explore numerous well-marked hiking trails ranging from short walks to multi-day routes, allowing immersion in the region's natural beauty and rural charm. Canoeing and fishing on the Vezere and other rivers are also popular. The park's commitment to sustainable development promotes eco-tourism, local products, and environmental education through visitor centers and events. Notable landmarks include the Château de Montbrun, the Château d’Auberoche, and the picturesque village of Oradour-sur-Vayres.
